How to Become Unshakeable
Conquer your inner voice
You know that little voice in your head saying things like, “I’m not qualified for that job, what’s the point of interviewing for it,” or “I keep getting passed over for a promotion, there must be something wrong with me.” Those nagging thoughts telling you that you’re not good enough come from your inner critic (or critical inner voice). Dr. Lisa Firestone, Ph.D., author of Conquer Your Critical Inner Voice, suggests following this 4-step process to conquer your inner critic:
Try: Identify what your critical inner voice is telling you but acknowledge that it is separate from your real point of view.
Think about your accomplishments
According to best-selling author and motivational speaker Denis Waitley, “To establish true self-confidence, we must concentrate on our successes and forget about the failures and the negatives in our lives.” So remembering all the great things you have achieved and also acknowledging the amazing skills you possess will not only boost your self confidence but also shut that inner critic out. Allow these memories to make you feel good and remind you who you really are.
Try: Think of 5 amazing things you have done. It can be anything from personal to work-related. For example, maybe you completed that half marathon race, burnt that last calorie on the treadmill even though you were about to pass out, or worked on a project yourself that you are proud of.
Develop an equality mentality
Have you ever felt like you are not good enough to apply for a certain role? Or feel like others are more deserving than you when it comes to rewards and achievements? Well, it’s time to stop that. Instead of carrying this perception, view yourself as being equal to everyone. Despite the perfect lives you see in your colleagues, friends and even those influencers, we all need to realise that no one has life figured out 100%. Make a mental shift to an equality mentality, and you will quickly see an improvement in your self-confidence.
Stand tall
Sounds easy…but it’s true. Standing tall and having good posture can help you feel more confident about yourself. It also let’s your confidence shine through to others. Standing tall reminds you that you are strong and can give you the effect of feeling ready.
Try: Whenever you find yourself in a hunched position, take a deep breath and straighten up your back. Pretend as if your head is being lifted by an invisible string. The better your posture, the better you will feel.
